The story of a volunteer who listens, teaches, and makes a difference
When Laura Bayala decided to study nutrition, she wasn’t just thinking about vitamins or calories.
Today, as a volunteer with Fundación San Genaro, Laura travels to rural schools in Santiago del Estero to bring something more than knowledge: she brings empathy, support, and tools that help reshape habits—and futures.
“I met the Foundation through Patricio, my neighbor. He told me about their work, and I instantly knew I wanted to be part of it. I sent over my CV and joined the team.”
Health starts with connection
The day begins early. The team packs up supplies and heads out on long dusty roads, where children and teachers await them with handmade signs, warm breakfasts, and even warmer hugs.
Classrooms turn into makeshift clinics. There are checkups, measurements, and most importantly—conversations. Because healthcare doesn’t start with a diagnosis. It starts when someone takes the time to listen.
“For many of the kids, it’s the first time seeing a healthcare professional. We look them in the eye, talk to them, teach them. And they respond with such trust—it’s beautiful.”
Throughout the day, the team detects growth issues, cases of undernutrition or obesity, and a lack of access to fresh food. But beyond that, something deeper is planted—the value of caring for oneself and others.
“After the workshops, some kids say they want to become doctors or nutritionists. Others say they’ll try to eat more veggies at home. That alone makes it all worthwhile.”
More than food: planting seeds of change
In these communities, fresh food isn’t always an option. The corner kiosk is closer than the nearest market. And between sodas, candy, and instant noodles, lifelong habits take root.
“It’s not about banning anything—it’s about guiding, showing new possibilities, and being mindful of context. You can’t teach change without understanding where people are coming from.”
Laura doesn’t bring quick fixes. She brings presence, empathy, and a quiet belief that even small actions can spark lasting change.
“Go once… and you’ll never be the same”
To those thinking about volunteering, Laura doesn’t offer advice. She offers certainty.
“You’ll face a reality that moves you. You’ll work hard. You’ll come back tired. But you’ll also return different. More human. More connected. And wanting to go back.”
Every trip is transformative—not just for those who receive care, but also for those who give it.
Laura’s dream
That every child, no matter where they’re born, knows what it means to eat well. That they don’t have to wait for visiting professionals to learn how to care for their bodies. That health becomes a right—not a privilege or a rare opportunity.
That’s the vision that keeps her going. And the reason why she always comes back.
