When Laura Bayala decided to study nutrition, she wasn\u2019t just thinking about vitamins or calories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, as a volunteer with Fundaci\u00f3n San Genaro, Laura travels to rural schools in Santiago del Estero to bring something more than knowledge: she brings empathy, support, and tools that help reshape habits\u2014and futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cI met the Foundation through Patricio, my neighbor. He told me about their work, and I instantly knew I wanted to be part of it. I sent over my CV and joined the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Health starts with connection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The day begins early. The team packs up supplies and heads out on long dusty roads, where children and teachers await them with handmade signs, warm breakfasts, and even warmer hugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Classrooms turn into makeshift clinics. There are checkups, measurements, and most importantly\u2014conversations.\nBecause healthcare doesn\u2019t start with a diagnosis. It starts when someone takes the time to listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cFor many of the kids, it\u2019s the first time seeing a healthcare professional. We look them in the eye, talk to them, teach them. And they respond with such trust\u2014it\u2019s beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Throughout the day, the team detects growth issues, cases of undernutrition or obesity, and a lack of access to fresh food. But beyond that, something deeper is planted\u2014the value of caring for oneself and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter the workshops, some kids say they want to become doctors or nutritionists. Others say they\u2019ll try to eat more veggies at home. That alone makes it all worthwhile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than food: planting seeds of change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
In these communities, fresh food isn\u2019t always an option. The corner kiosk is closer than the nearest market. And between sodas, candy, and instant noodles, lifelong habits take root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s not about banning anything\u2014it\u2019s about guiding, showing new possibilities, and being mindful of context. You can\u2019t teach change without understanding where people are coming from.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Laura doesn\u2019t bring quick fixes. She brings presence, empathy, and a quiet belief that even small actions can spark lasting change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To those thinking about volunteering, Laura doesn\u2019t offer advice. She offers certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laura\u2019s dream<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
That every child, no matter where they\u2019re born, knows what it means to eat well.\nThat they don\u2019t have to wait for visiting professionals to learn how to care for their bodies.\nThat health becomes a right\u2014not a privilege or a rare opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
